Notes: Gooden was named player of the year by Basketball American and was ESPN The Magazine's Power Forward of the Year. While he only stayed for three seasons, Drew Gooden ranks 12th on the Kansas all-time scoring list with 1,526 points and checks in at fifth on the rebounds chart with 905 career boards.
During his junior season, which saw him garner consensus first-team All-American status, Gooden lead the Jayhawks to the Final Four and a perfect 16-0 Big 12 regular season. Gooden led KU and the Big 12 in scoring and rebounding with 19.8 points and 11.4 rebounds per game. His 734 points rank sixth on Kansas' single-season scoring list. Gooden's 423 rebounds are the second-most in a single-season in KU history. He also set Kansas and Big 12 single-season records with 25
double-doubles on the year.
Became just the second player in KU history (joining Danny Manning) to record at least 1,500 points, 900 rebounds, 100 blocks and 100 steals in a career. During the summer of 2000, Gooden played for the U.S. squad that went 4-1 in Brazil while qualifying for the USA World Championship For Young Men.
Positives: Gooden is as versatile a player as there is in the draft. He can run the floor with any power forward, beat them back down the court, and make a defensive play. His game stretched out to the perimeter as a junior, and he can put the ball on the floor without a problem. He continues to make big shots and his maturity on the court improved with each game. He proved he could also be a leader this season.
Negatives: Gooden still needs to get stronger. His versatility means he can play either small or power forward in the NBA, but to truly bang he'll have to beef up a bit. He can always improve on his ball skills and hitting a jumper off the dribble.
Summary: Gooden could be in the top three because of his versatility -- which is not an overused word when it comes to Gooden. He's agile and will interview well when teams look to invest major money in him.
