DeAngelo Collins

POWER FORWARD | (6-9, 220) | null

Notes: DeAngelo Collins hopes to bury a troubled past as he enters the NBA draft out of Inglewood (Calif.) High School. Collins' best performance on the court came this past season when he averaged 23 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks. But he missed 12 games after suffering a knee injury midway through the season.

Collins has unquestioned NBA potential and big-time talent. He is ranked among the top five on most lists of 2002 high school seniors this year. Collins was named the MVP of the ABCD All-Star Game last summer.

As a junior at Inglewood he averaged 14 points and 9 rebounds a game. His numbers were even better as a sophomore when he went for 20 and 15 a night.

The McDonald's All-Americans just three years removed from pleading guilty to felony assault and serving six months in juvenile hall. As a freshman at Tustin High, Collins inflicted permanent head injuries and a fractured nose that required surgery when he beat up a teammate.

Positives: Collins has the quickness and shooting touch of a guard, but the size, and shot-blocking ability of a center. Runs the floor well. A solid rebounder who can jump out of the gym. An excellent athlete.

Negatives: Collins could use another 30 pounds of muscle, and he has a long way to go fundamentally. Teams are very concerned about his multitude of off-the-court problems. As a freshman, Collins pleaded guilty to felony assault and served six months in juvenile hall for beating up a teammate. Collins committed another 27 documented transgressions in a seven-month span. He's been on his best behavior of late, but the concerns are still there.

Summary: Think of Collins as a more athletic, less experienced and disciplined version Jared Jeffries. He does lots of things pretty well, nothing great.
