Lazaros Papadopoulos

CENTER | (6-11, 240) | GREECE

Notes: Lazaros Papadopoulos is a member of the Greek National Team, playing at the 1999 World Junior Championship and at the 2000 Under 20 European Championship. Won the bronze medal at the 1998 European Junior Championship.

Professional career started when he was signed by B.C. Iraklis Thessaloniki (Greece) for the 1996-97 season. Played five seasons for B.C. Iraklis before signing with Panathinaikos A.O. Athens this past season, which won the 2001-02 Euroleague ULEB Cup.

Averaged 6.1 ppg and 4.6 rpg for Panathinaikos AO Athens, including 12 in the team's European Final Four title game victory over Kinder Bologna.

Was selected to the 2000-01 Greek League All-Star Game.

Positives: Papadopoulos is a decent athlete with nice size. He has a decent low-post game, is a decent shot-blocker and has a nice touch from 10 feet in. A good free throw shooter for a big man. Runs the floor OK. Handles the ball well for a big man. Has really long arms. If he learns better timing, could be a force blocking shots.

Negatives: Seems a bit awkward considering Papadopoulos has been playing professionally for five years. If he's going to play in the NBA, he'll really need to work on his upper-body strength. Tends to get pushed around in the post. He's very inconsistent. Isn't a very good rebounder for someone his size. That may have a lot to do with his lack of strength.

Summary: Papadopoulos dominated David Andersen in the Euroleague championships in front of a host of NBA scouts. There's no doubt he needs a lot of polish, but he's got size going for him and is worth the risk in the second round.
