CHICAGO -- UCLA recruit Kevin Love scored 21 points and had
16 rebounds and James Hickson added 24 points as the West defeated
the East 144-123 in the Roundball Classic at the United Center on
Love dominated the paint and shot 10-for-17 from the field.
The West controlled the game, outscoring the East 34-12 during a
span in the first and second quarters. Corey Fisher hit
back-to-back 3's for the West to give them a 58-35 lead with 6:40
left in the second quarter. Fisher, headed to Villanova, finished
with 13 points and 16 assists.
Hickson, who will play at North Carolina State, also had eight
rebounds. Love, Hickson, and Fisher shared the MVP.
Mayo, who is going to Southern California, shot 11-for-18 from
the field and was 5-for-10 on 3-point attempts. He was the West's
Nyal Koshwal, a 6-foot-9, 238-pound forward headed to DePaul,
scored 19 points for the West.
Herb Pope, who was scheduled to play for the West squad was shot
early Saturday. Pope from Aliquippa Pa., remained hospitalized in
Pittsburgh on Tuesday, recovering from gunshot wounds to the
abdomen, thigh and lower left arm. Aliquippa coach Marvin Emerson
said Pope's injuries are not life-threatening. Pope is committed to
play for New Mexico St.
