Division II Slippery Rock will cut eight varsity sports

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Slippery Rock University is cutting eight varsity sports in an effort to save about $350,000 a year, school officials said Monday.

Men's golf, swimming, water polo, tennis and wrestling are being cut at the NCAA Division II school, along with women's field hockey, swimming and water polo. The cuts will take effect when the 2005-06 academic year ends this spring.

The cuts impact 122 athletes. Those on athletic scholarships can remain at the school for as long as they would have been eligible to participate in their sport, provided they continue to meet academic standards, school officials said.
