Wichita State escapes Houston in Norman Regional

NORMAN, Okla. -- Aaron Shafer threw seven strong innings and
set a freshman record for wins at Wichita State in the Shockers'
2-1 win against Houston on Friday in the opening round of the NCAA
Shafer (11-3) allowed one run on six hits in seven innings and
Conor Gillaspie drove in the winning run with a double in the
seventh inning to lead Wichita State, the No. 3 seed in the Norman
Josh Workman walked with one out and stole second base before
coming around to score on Gillaspie's two-out double to right
The Shockers (45-20) rallied to score after Shafer escaped from
a bases-loaded jam by getting Houston catcher Luis Flores to fly
out to end the sixth inning. Noah Booth pitched two scoreless
innings for his seventh save.
Brad Lincoln (12-2), the Conference USA pitcher of the year,
walked a season-high five batters and had his 10-game winning
streak snapped. He gave up both Wichita State runs and yielded
seven hits while striking out five. He remains five strikeouts shy
of the Houston season record of 157.
