Alvarez lifts Commodores past Michigan

ATLANTA -- Matt Buschmann threw a six-hitter, and Pedro
Alvarez set a school record with one of Vanderbilt's three homers in the 5-2 win over Michigan.
Alvarez, a freshman, hit a solo homer in the fifth, his 20th of
the season to break a four-way tie for Vanderbilt's season record.
Ryan Davis hit a two-run homer in the second to break a 1-all
tie, and Brian Hernandez went deep two batters after Alvarez to
account for the game's final run. Buschmann (6-4) threw 134 pitches
in his third complete game of the season.
A.J. Scheidt drove in both Michigan runs, but the Wolverines
(42-20) lost pitcher Zach Putnam (6-2) to a potentially serious
injury in the second. He lasted only 1 2-3 innings, leaving the
game after feeling something pop in his elbow.
Vanderbilt (37-25) advanced to face the Georgia Tech-Stetson
winner, while Michigan will play the loser.
