Degerman strikes out 14 in Rice's win

HOUSTON -- Senior Eddie Degerman struck out a season-high 14
batters, leading Rice to a 7-2 win over Baylor Sunday to advance to
Monday's championship game of the NCAA Houston regional.
Rice (52-10) will meet either Baylor (36-25) or Arizona State in
the championship game Monday. Baylor played Arizona State in an
elimination game later Sunday.
The Owls jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on RBI
singles by Greg Buchanan and Joe Savery and an RBI double by Josh
Rodriguez. Tyler Henley added an RBI single in the second. The Owls
added three unearned runs off Baylor reliever Nick Cassavechia in
the sixth inning.
Baylor's only runs came in the fourth inning. Seth Fortenberry
and Zach Dillon each drew one-out walks before Degerman retired
Beamer Weems on a pitcher-unassisted putout for the second out of
the inning. Rice second baseman Greg Buchanan misplayed a routine
two-out grounder, allowing Fortenberry and Dillon to score the
Bears' lone runs and end Degerman's shutout.
Degerman (12-1) worked eight innings, allowing five hits and two
unearned runs. Cole St. Clair pitched a scoreless ninth for Rice.
Baylor starter Randall Linebaugh (6-1) took the loss. He allowed
seven hits and four runs in 6 1-3 innings.
