Rice overcomes 3-run deficit to win Houston Regional

HOUSTON -- Top-seeded Rice scored seven consecutive runs to
overcome an early 3-0 deficit and defeat Baylor 7-4 on Monday to
win the Houston Regional.
After Baylor took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning, the
Owls responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning and never
looked back.
Rice (53-10) will host either Wichita State or Oklahoma this
weekend in a best-of-three super regional. Baylor ends its season
with a 37-26 record.
Rice starter Joe Savery (5-1) pitched five innings of two-hit
ball, allowing three earned runs while walking two and striking out
The Owls scored all their fifth-inning runs after two outs had
been recorded.
Third baseman Josh Rodriguez hit a two-run home run following a
Tyler Henley single to pull Rice within 3-2. Owl catcher Adam
Zornes later doubled home two more runs and eventually scored on
right-fielder Jordan Dodson's triple for a 5-3 Rice lead.
The Owls added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings on a
sacrifice fly by Rodriguez and a double from Dodson that scored
Aaron Luna. Baylor took its short-lived lead on a bases-loaded wild
pitch from Savery and Zach Dillon's single to right that scored
Kevin Russo and Beamer Weems.
Tim Matthews (6-5) took the loss for Baylor.
