Top starters

Editor's note: While traveling around the country, Mark Schlereth will be talking to MLB scouts and asking them to rank the best players at certain positions and in certain situations. The one rule is that the scout has to have seen the players in action. We also are giving the scouts anonymity so their teams' potential draft plans won't be corrupted. This week's scout is a national scout from a American League team.

Top projected starting pitchers

Aaron Crow, Missouri (RHP): The scout tells me his fastball gets up to 96 miles per hour and he has an above average slider and changeup.

Brian Matusz, San Diego (LHP): This kid has a good mix of four pitches including a fastball that kicks up to 95 mph and an above average changeup.

Shooter Hunt, Tulane (RHP): This kid has a fastball that can get to 94 mph and a good changeup. His curveball is fantastic and can freeze hitters.

Bryan Price, Rice (RHP): He's a closer right now, but he has the ability to be a starter in the majors. He has a great fastball that gets to 95 mph with a slider setup as his out pitch.

Ryan Perry, Arizona (RHP): His slide piece is very good especially after you've seen his 95 mph fastball. This is another kid who is a closer now, but who projects well as a starter on the next level.
