PEORIA, Ill. -- An autopsy has revealed that a Bradley University baseball player died of an undiagnosed heart condition.
Peoria County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll told the Peoria Journal Star newspaper that 21-year-old junior Phil Kaiser had a condition known as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy that causes the heart's walls to thicken.
Authorities say Kaiser went to church and shopping Sunday night and died at a local hospital after being was found unresponsive at his girlfriend's apartment around 2 a.m. Monday. He spoke to his mother by phone around 11:30 p.m. Sunday.
Ingersoll says Kaiser's condition caused his heart to stop after he experienced an irregular heart beat.
Kaiser is from the Chicago suburb of Berwyn and played two seasons for the Bradley baseball team. He was studying communications and advertising.
