Capital One partners on academic team

The Academic All-America program, which has recognized top scholar-athletes for more than half a century, has a new partner.

Capital One has joined with the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) to sponsor the annual awards, which go to top academic achievers in every NCAA sport that sponsors a championship. In all, about 1,950 athletes earn all-district honors (in eight districts), 820 earn All-America honors and 288 are first-team Academic All-Americans, as chosen by a committee and the CoSIDA Board of Directors

The program began in 1952.

Through 2011, there will be a University Division (NCAA Division I participants) team and a College Division team (combining NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA, Canadian, and two-year schools). Beginning with the next academic year, there will be NCAA Division I, Division II and Division III teams and a separate College Division program combining NAIA, Canadian and two-year school honorees.
