Martin Newton named Samford AD

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Samford has hired former Bulldogs basketball player Martin Newton as its athletic director.

Newton was introduced Wednesday and will replace Bob Roller this spring. Newton played for Samford from 1979 to 1983.

He is currently director of operations for men's basketball at Kentucky, where his father, C.M. Newton, was athletic director after coaching basketball at Alabama and Vanderbilt.

Martin Newton earned four varsity letters and a business degree from Samford. He then worked in sports marketing for Converse and Nike before taking the Kentucky job in 2009.

Newton managed an $11 million budget at Kentucky, along with fundraising, compliance, scheduling, marketing and academic support for the men's basketball program.
