BRYAN, Texas -- UCLA took a two-stroke lead over Virginia, and the Cavaliers' Brittany Altomare shot a 3-under 69 in windy conditions Wednesday to stop the individual standings after the first round of the NCAA Division I women's golf championship.
Playing the back nine first at the Traditions Club, Altomare birdied five of the first seven holes. She had two birdies and four bogeys on her final nine. Michigan State's Caroline Powers, competing as an individual, was a stroke back along with Wake Forest's Michelle Shin and UCLA's Glory Yang.
UCLA had a 1-over 289 total. Defending champion Purdue and LSU were tied for third at 4 over.
Tiffany Lua added a 71 for UCLA, Lee Lopez had a 73, and Stephanie Kono opened with a 75. Ani Gulugian's 78 didn't count in the team total.
The four-round tournament ends Saturday.
