Kohl's Western region recap

The last couple of weeks allowed Kohl's to see some of the best kickers, punters, and snappers in the Western region of the United States. We started a camp tour in Seattle and finished in Salt Lake City. Many of the athletes we saw should have a great impact on their high school games this season.

Here is a recap of some of the most outstanding performers at each camp.

Seattle
Cameron Van Winkle (Fall City, Wash/Fall City) won the field goal competition with a 53-yarder and showed once again why he is one of the nation's best kickers in the 2013 class. Bryan Maley (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak) won the kickoff competition at camp by hitting a 68-yard kickoff that had 3.65 seconds of hang time. Rick Gombotz (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor) and Erik Nothstein (Graham, Wash./Graham) charted the best on punts at the camp.

Eugene, Ore.
Dariano Mancuso (Eugene, Ore./Eugene) won the field goal competition with a 50-yarder. Ryan Cope (Portland, Ore./Portland) won the kickoff competition with a 68-yard blast that had 3.91 seconds of hang time. The punting winner was Colton Bowden (Springfield, Ore./Springfield) with a 51-yarder that had 4.25 seconds of hang time.

Visalia, Calif.
Kirk Haskill (Larkspur, Calif./Redwood) won the field goal competition with a 53-yarder. Koree Durkee (Gig Harbor, Wash./Gig Harbor) won the kickoff competition with a 68-yarder that had 3.85 seconds of hang time. Austin Robinson (Nipono, Calif.,/Nipono) won the punting competition with a 51-yarder.

Denver
Trevor Bolton and Miles MacKenzie showed high-level college potential at the camp. Both campers should be guys to watch as the recruiting process heats up. Both hit kickoffs that traveled over 70 yards on a fairly consistent basis. Both campers also hit their field goals consistently. Jesse Vieira (Monument, Colo./Monument) won the field goal competition with a 52-yarder. Hank Wintrescheidt (Aurora, Colo./ Regis Jesuit) also showed very well in the punting portion of camp.

San Jose, Calif.
Ian Sternau (Sacramento, Calif./St. Francis) won the field goal competition with a 48-yarder. He also won the kickoff competition with a 68-yarder that had 3.65 seconds of hang time. Sternau had a solid day at camp, and should have a great season this fall. Drew Riggleman (Scottsdale, Ariz./ Sahuaro) won the punting competition with a 46-yard blast that had 4.55 seconds of hang time. He showed college potential in the punting drills as well.

San Juan Capistrano, Calif.
This camp was dominated by 2010 kicker David Mothander (Exeter, N.H./Phillips Exeter), who won the field goal competition with a 51-yarder. He also won the punt competition with a 62-yard blast that had 4.65 seconds of hang time. 2011 kicker Jake Bons (Escondido, Calif./Calvin Christian) had the best kickoffs at camp and he won the competition with a 79-yarder that had 3.95 seconds of hang time. He consistently was hitting kickoffs that were landing out of the end zone.

Salt Lake City, Utah
Riley Harper (Murray, Utah/Cottonwood) showed great height on his field goals at the camp. He also hit kickoffs that were consistently going into the end zone. Punter Robert Deveridge (Murray, Utah/Cottonwood) had the most impressive punts at camp. His hang times and overall leg strength were very impressive. Anthony Mares (Salt Lake City/ Brighton) made a 55-yard field goal off the ground to win the field goal competition. He also consistently hit kickoffs that went at least 65 yards and had multiple punts travel over 40 yards in the air. He is someone to keep an eye on.
