HOUSTON -- Inclement weather put somewhat of a damper on the Nike SPARQ combine, but there were still over 750 athletes who braved the wind and rain headlined by an area defensive tackle who has the potential to emerge as one of the best in Texas.
Anthony Smith, DL (Houston, Texas/Westfield)
Smith was named top senior performer at the combine and recently picked up his first scholarship offer from Baylor. He said Texas A&M and TCU are on him hard as well and are close to offering. Other schools showing interest include Northwestern, LSU, Arizona, Colorado, Iowa and Oregon. Miami is Smith's dream school and he said he would commit on the spot if offered by the Hurricanes. Smith attended the Aggies junior day and will be at TCU's as well.
Jeromy Irwin, OL (Houston, Texas/Cy Fair)
Irwin has an offer from Colorado and is also hearing from Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU and Alabama. The lineman attended the Aggies junior day and has been invited to the Tide's junior day event as well. Irwin said he's hoping to visit Nebraska and Colorado for spring practice and has a top three of Texas A&M, Alabama and Texas.
Sean Irwin, TE (Houston, Texas/Cy Fair)
Twin brother of Jeromy, Irwin isn't as highly recruited as his brother but said he's currently hearing from Texas A&M, LSU, Arizona and Oklahoma State. He caught 13 passes for 330 yards and two touchdowns last year. Irwin attended junior days at Texas A&M.
Blake Webb, WR (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands)
Webb is currently hearing from Nebraska, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, UCLA and LSU. The receiver has already taken unofficial visits to LSU, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Texas and attended the Aggies junior day. The Longhorns top Webb's list followed by LSU, A&M, Oregon and Miami. As a junior, he caught 47 balls for 980 yards and five touchdowns.
Akeem Harrison, WR (Killeen, Texas/Killeen)
Just a sophomore, Harrison started a year ago catching 23 balls for 432 yards and five touchdowns. The receiver is hearing from Texas Tech and Boise State and called Florida his dream school. The Red Raiders and Auburn are also on his short list and Harrison said he's going to try and visit Georgia and Florida over the summer.
Dillon Winfrey, WR (Littlerock, Ark./Bryant)
Winfrey's 4.51 40 time and 4.00 shuttle time were both good enough for top five marks in the combine. As a junior, Winfrey caught 19 balls for 350 yards and four touchdowns and added 65 tackles and two interceptions on defense. The athlete said he plans to camp at Arkansas and Ole Miss this summer and is also interested in Nebraska, Oregon and LSU.
Jerry Bynum, RB (Houston, Texas./Elsik)
Bynum does not always test well at combines, but definitely can get it done on the field. He rushed for 1,589 yards and 22 touchdowns last season. Texas A&M has offered and Miami, Kansas State, USC and Oregon are also showing interest. The Canes are his dream school and the Aggies and Trojans are high on his list as well.
Zorrell Ezell, DL (Houston, Texas./Humble)
Ezell, who earned district defensive MVP last season, has early offers from Kansas State and Baylor. If Texas offers, it could be tough to beat and the lineman said Texas A&M, Kansas State and TCU could get visits later in the summer.
Sherman Gilbert, RB (Coldspring, Texas/Coldspring)
Gilbert is the younger brother of Oklahoma State freshman defensive back Justin Gilbert. He rushed for 1,845 yards and 24 touchdowns last season and is currently hearing from Texas A&M, Texas Tech and LSU. The Cowboys have also shown some interest but the running back is still waiting for his first offer.
