Caleb Swanigan dropped 100-plus pounds in high school. But everyone I asked about those early years said he had uncanny basketball instincts even when he was a heavier player. That's what impressed Roosevelt Barnes when he first brought Swanigan to Fort Wayne as a teenager. He knew the game. Needed the body.

Kansas had two turnovers in the first 40 seconds tonight, and even at that very early point it looked like Press Virginia was well on its way to claiming another victim. Since then, the Jayhawks have settled in -- and are utilizing WVU's frantic, scrambling overplays to their own advantage, getting good looks at 3s in the process.

Mountaineers Get Off to Flying Start

West Virginia's Esa Ahmad drives and finishes with a one-handed dunk early on against Kansas. It's a tight game in the first half (on ESPN).

Love watching games - such as West Virginia - where students get the good seats. They bring the atmosphere and energy.

Here's something I learned today about Bob Huggins' contract at West Virginia: He gets $25,000 each time he beats Kansas, regardless of location. It's the only school in his contract with that designation. He's won 3 straight for $75,000. Going for a four-year total of $100,000 in four years tonight at 7 pm on ESPN.

UCLA is watching five-star wing M.J. Walker today. Seems like Florida State and UCLA are making the biggest push for the uncommitted senior.

ESPN Stats and Information

Kansas is 4-0 in true road games this season, but tonight's game at West Virginia is the Jayhawks' first road game against a ranked opponent. Kansas has lost 3 straight road games at West Virginia; they have never lost four straight road games to a Big 12 opponent.

Just visited with player of the year candidate senior Frank Mason of Kansas here in Morgantown (ESPN, 7 pm). He said something most high-level college players never say: "I wish I could play four more years."
