69. Kentucky, 1958

The likes of Wilt Chamberlain (Kansas), Oscar Robertson (Cincinnati), Elgin Baylor (Seattle) and Jerry West (West Virginia) were among the dominant names in the 1957-58 season but it was Adolph Rupp's Kentucky squad that stood tall at the end of the season, winning his fourth and final national championship despite not having one consensus All-American. The Wildcats beat Temple by a point on a Vernon Hatton shot in the final seconds during the Final Four and then overcame Seattle by 12 in the championship game, despite Baylor's 25-point, 19-rebound effort. Location certainly helped. The Wildcats played their regional games in Lexington and the Final Four in Louisville. It was like a home game for the program. They may have experienced a different outcome at a more neutral site. -- Myron Medcalf
