Bruins prove they can win big games when Lonzo Ball struggles

Lonzo Ball wasn't at his best Saturday against No. 1 Kentucky, but No. 11 UCLA was still able to find a way to beat an elite team.

Bracketology: The quick rise of Baylor basketball

Remember way, way back on Nov. 3 -- a whole four weeks ago -- when Baylor debuted as a No. 8 seed? Well, things have changed -- in a hurry. The Bears have made a big move.

Ray Smith's career ended before it started

Arizona's Ray Smith, once a top-30 prospect, retired a few weeks ago. He's only 19. But after a third ACL injury, he opted to walk away and start the next part of his life. And he's OK with that.

2 weeks ago VBDI told my twit fam @UCLAMBB would be Most IMPROVED team in the nation / UCLA 97. UK 92 @ Rupp Bruins 6 in double figures

ESPN Stats and Information

UCLA's 97 points are the most allowed by a John Calipari-led Kentucky team. The loss snaps a 42-game home win streak for Kentucky, which was the second-longest streak in Division 1.

ESPN Stats and Information

For the second straight year on December 3rd, UCLA defeats a No. 1 ranked Kentucky. UCLA now has 12 wins against the AP No. 1 team, the second-most in the AP Poll era (since 1949).

Six months ago, Steve Alford gave back his raise. Today he beat top-ranked Kentucky at Rupp. Sports are fickle...

John Gasaway @JohnGasaway

UCLA scores an official 1.17 points per possession. Loss sends John Calipari's record at Rupp crashing all the way down to 124-5.

UCLA takes down No. 1 Kentucky at Rupp

The 11th-ranked Bruins' hot start to the season continued with a 97-92 win at Kentucky. UCLA star Lonzo Ball had 14 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds and this big late 3-pointer.

Lottery pick PG battle: • De'Aaron Fox: 17 points, eight assists, two turnovers • Lonzo Ball: 14 points, five boards, seven assists, six turnovers

Tony Bennett kept telling team 'our pace' yesterday at practice when talking about WVU press. In other words, don't let em speed you up

UCLA has just one turnover since the 10:50 mark of the first half. Bruins have outscored Kentucky by 18 points during that stretch.

T.J. Leaf told me he knows people think he is soft. Showing some toughness today.

Have a feeling it's going to be pretty wild here at the JPJ for Virginia-West Virginia. Students arrived early. Of course the Mountaineers would like to add to the frenzy with their press.

I think Steve Alford has to be confident knowing he's up 4 at halftime on the road against the No. 1 team and his star PG hasn't played well.

Dana O'Neil ESPN Senior Writer

UCLA up 49-45 on Kentucky at half. Will I see that many points in the game between Virginia and West Virginia?

Jeff Goodman ESPN Insider

Most NBA guys have De'Aaron Fox listed fourth or even fifth on board of top point guards. Fox has been sensational thus far -- and it'll be interesting to see if he moves up in eyes of executives. Right now most agree top 3 are some combo of Markelle Fultz (Washington), Dennis Smith (NC State) and Lonzo Ball (UCLA). French point guard Frank Ntilikina also in mix for possible lottery pick.

Jeff Goodman ESPN Insider

Aaron Holiday started every game last season and has come off bench this season with addition of Lonzo Ball. He's been UCLA's best player in first half - and has thrived in new role. Told me last week he doesn't care about coming off bench, just wants to do what's best for the team.

Myron Medcalf ESPN Staff Writer

UCLA's TJ Leaf entered this game shooting 73 percent inside the arc. He has seven rebounds and two assists to go along with his six points (3-for-4). Was overlooked with the Lonzo Ball-De'Aaron Fox buzz. Could end the night as the most significant player on the court for the Bruins.

Jeff Goodman ESPN Insider

Lonzo Ball hasn't made a shot, has turned it over 4 times already and hasn't guarded anyone. But UCLA only down 3 with 7:33 left in first half.

Eamonn Brennan ESPN Staff Writer

In addition to his offensive gifts (which are considerable, and already readily evident), Lonzo Ball has the tools to be a really, really good defender ... one day. Today? It's a bit of a mess.

Myron Medcalf ESPN Staff Writer

Malik Monk is a great defensive presence for Kentucky right now. Doing a great job of playing the passing lanes. On the turnover he just forced, he didn't even see the pass but he had his hands up and deflected it. So active. All from a guy who admits he didn't play a lot of defense in high school because he didn't have to.
