New Mexico's fifth-leading scorer takes shot overseas

ALBUQUERQUE -- A former New Mexico guard has signed a deal to play pro basketball in Greece.

Ruben Douglas, the fifth-leading scorer in the history of University of New Mexico men's basketball, recently signed with Panionios of the Greek League.

Douglas led the nation in scoring as a senior last season. But he was passed over in the NBA draft in June and during summer tryouts.

The Greek team will pay him the equivalent of $100,000 in American currency, said his agent, John Greig of Seattle.

"I think on this team, Ruben will be counted on to do a predominant amount of the scoring," Greig said.

He said Douglas' goal is to earn a chance to make an NBA summer league roster next year and a chance to make a roster in an NBA training camp.

The Greek team will begin its season in early October. Greig said Douglas won't return home until next May at the earliest.
