STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- George Washington associate coach Steve Pikiell was hired as head coach at Stony Brook on Wednesday.
Pikiell replaces Nick Macarchuk, who resigned after six seasons to become special assistant to athletic director James Fiore.
A guard at Connecticut, Pikiell played for Jim Calhoun and was a member of the 1989-90 team that won the Big East Conference regular-season and team championships.
``I was a gym rat and was fortunate to be offered an assistant coach's position when I finished my playing career at UConn,'' Pikiell said. ``Without getting that opportunity under Coach Calhoun, I probably would not be where I am today.''
Pikiell went from Connecticut to Yale for three seasons, became assistant at Central Connecticut for five years and then associate at George Washington, where he spent the last three seasons.

Macarchuk went 64-108 in his six seasons with the Seawolves.
