Guard dismissed for conduct detrimental to team

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue freshman guard Korey Spates
has been removed from the Boilermakers' roster for what the school
said was conduct detrimental to the team.

Spates was averaging 10.1 points and 2.5 rebounds per game for
Purdue, which has lost four projected starters to injuries or
suspensions this season.

"We felt that it would be in the best interests of Korey and
our team to part company," Purdue coach Matt Painter said Monday
in a statement. "I wish nothing but the best for him and his

Painter suspended the 6-foot Spates for six days in November
before the season started.

Spates did not practice on Monday, and his release was not the
result of a single action, team spokesman Elliot Bloom said.

Spates had played in 15 games for the Boilermakers (7-10, 1-5
Big Ten). He played 16 minutes and scored five points in Saturday's
loss to Indiana.
