EL PASO, Texas -- Hall of Fame basketball coach Don Haskins will receive the Harlem Globetrotters' 2006 Saperstine Award, the famous exhibition team announced Tuesday.
Haskins, the sixth winner of the award, will be honored next week at the National Association of Basketball Coaches college all-star game in Indianapolis.
The Saperstine Award, named in honor of Globetrotter founder Abe Saperstein, has been awarded since 2000 to people who represent "the spirit, love of basketball and ambassadorial excellence" of Saperstine, team officials said.
Haskins made history in 1966 at Texas Western College -- now known as the University of Texas at El Paso -- when he had the first all-black starting five in an NCAA championship game. The Miners beat all-white Kentucky to win the title.
