CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- National player of the year Tyler Hansbrough will not play for top-ranked North Carolina against North Carolina-Asheville on Sunday night for precautionary reasons as he recovers from a preseason shin injury. Hansbrough was coming off a 34-point performance against Notre Dame in the finals of the Maui Invitational.
A North Carolina spokesperson told ESPN's Andy Katz that Hansbrough's right shin injury that kept him out of the first two games stiffened up on the long flight back from Maui. North Carolina coach Roy Williams will make a decision after Wednesday's shootaround in Detroit at Ford Field if Hansbrough will play against Michigan State in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge headline game.
Meanwhile, MSU coach Tom Izzo said Sunday in Orlando that there is only a 15-20 percent chance that Goran Suton will play against the Tar Heels due to a sprained left knee. Suton didn't play in any of the three games in the Old Spice Classic.
