Duke guard Elliot Williams is transferring to Memphis.
Williams, a rising sophomore guard, was granted his release Wednesday from Duke because his mom is sick.
He's declined to be more specific about his mother's illness.
He is expected to appeal to the NCAA for a hardship waiver which, if granted, would allow him to play for the Tigers immediately.
The Memphis native, who was played sparingly for most of the year, saw his minutes increase after a Feb. 15 loss to Boston College handed Duke its first two-game losing streak of the season.
Williams, who hadn't played in either loss, created a spark that helped coach Mike Krzyzewski's troops to a 10-2 record the rest of the way.
He finished the season with averages of 4.2 points and 2.3 rebounds.
