MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The University of Memphis will plead for leniency from NCAA punishment of the men's basketball team Friday before the Infractions Appeals Committee in Indianapolis.
Stacey Osburn, the NCAA's associate director for public and media relations, confirmed Wednesday that the hearing will be closed. She also said via e-mail that the NCAA will not comment until the report is prepared and released four to six weeks after the hearing.
Memphis is arguing the Committee on Infractions imposed unprecedented penalties with improper reasoning in wiping out 38 wins from the 2007-08 season that ended with an overtime loss to Kansas in the national title game.
University counsel Sheri Lipman said Memphis will not comment before or after the hearing.
