The Division I Council approved legislation Wednesday at the NCAA convention that adjusts the start of practice for the football and basketball seasons, pending approval this spring from the Division I Board of Directors. In football, this measure corrects the problem created last year when two-a-days were eliminated. Under the change, football teams may open practice 29 days before their first games. Basketball teams may start practice on the Tuesday before the second Saturday of October — a shift of less than a week from the current date.

After another dominating win, BPI now views Purdue as the best team going forward and the favorite to win the NCAA tournament at 21 percent. Villanova, Virginia, Duke, and Michigan State round out BPI's current top five.

The NCAA convention is underway here in Indianapolis. The Division I Council will hear a report today on plans to adjust the rules for transfers. One concept under consideration would eliminate the year that undergraduate football and basketball players are required to sit out after a transfer. It is not yet a formal proposal and will not be up for vote here, but the idea already faces strong opposition in the coaching community. " It's about balance," said Penn State AD Sandy Barbour, who sits on the Football Oversight Committee. "It's about giving students appropriate freedom and appropriate flexibility -- and yet at the same time, [asks], 'What are students' obligations to the institutions?'" More to come after the council session this afternoon.

I asked DeMarcus Cousins yesterday whether he thought his former college coach John Calipari would ever coach in the NBA again: "I don't think so. He's in a position to walk into the sunset. He's in the perfect place." But Cousins added that he thinks, partially due to coaching all the one-and-dones, that Cal would be much better equipped now than the first time around. "He was young. You live and learn. He's dealt with all types of personnel, future pros -- and that's prepared himself to deal with pros."

Trae Young has eight points (on 3-of-10 shooting) to go along with four assists and eight turnovers, as Oklahoma trails Kansas State 38-33 at the half in Manhattan. The freshman has turned in some big second halves, and the Sooners could use one of those.

Clemson falls to 0-59 all-time in Chapel Hill, the longest road losing streak against a single opponent in Division I history.

John Gasaway ESPN Insider

North Carolina's multi-decade streak of home-court perfection against Clemson remains intact. In a series dating to 1926, the Tigers have never won a game in Chapel Hill. Clemson is now 0-59 at UNC after tonight's 87-79 loss to the Tar Heels at the Dean Dome. One of the weirdest and most incredible streaks in sports continues.

John Gasaway ESPN Insider

Clemson hasn't won a game in Chapel Hill since 1926 (yes, you're reading that correctly), but the Tigers are making things interesting tonight. After trailing by as many as 18, Brad Brownell's team has stormed back and made this a two-possession game with less than eight minutes remaining.

UCF leads Cincinnati 19-15 at the half in Orlando, putting the Knights and the Bearcats within shouting distance of the record for fewest combined points in a D-I game since 1986 (62). We knew coming into the game that these were two of the best defenses in the country. We were right.

Purdue's living up to its No. 3 ranking and rolling over Wisconsin 39-22 at the half in West Lafayette. Carsen Edwards has led the Boilermakers with 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Whether it's the Boilers, Ohio State or Michigan State, the highest NCAA tournament seed from the Big Ten could be a very tough out in March.

There might not be a more pivotal game than Georgia@LSU tonight. @ESPNU Both teams are within 4-5 spots of the at-large cut line and will meet a second time on Feb. 24. Significant if either can sweep the other, so pressure is on LSU to hold serve at home.

Duke and Kansas each have three McDonald's All-Americans, while Vanderbilt, Oregon, Kentucky and North Carolina have two selections apiece.

After losing to Kansas last night, West Virginia's chances of earning a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament dropped to below 1%, per BPI. Not going to happen.

On Monday, there were three games involving ranked teams. Each game was won by teams overcoming double-digit deficits.

It certainly was not pretty at times for Duke, between the turnovers and inability to score through a long stretch in the second half. But with Marvin Bagley III essentially contained, Gary Trent Jr. stepped up in a big way and the Blue Devils overcame a 13-point deficit to win.

Michigan's Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman made a pair of free throws with 1.2 second to give the Wolverines a 68-67 win at home against Maryland. The Terps took a 67-66 lead moments earlier, but a perfect half-court pass to Abdur-Rahkman gave him enough time to take a few dribbles toward the hoop and pick up the foul.

The second half has been a game of runs: First Miami took the lead off a 16-0 run, and now Duke has taken back the lead with a 15-0 run of its own. Needless to say, this game is a microcosm for what Duke has done all season: a talented team that struggles on D but is nearly as unstoppable as any when the offense is clicking.

Andrea Adelson ESPN Staff Writer

Miami has taken control in the second half, not only playing with a higher intensity level but also way more controlled. The Canes are forcing turnovers, scoring in transition and hitting 3s. Marvin Bagley III has been taken out of the game, and nobody else is in sync on offense for Duke.

Andrea Adelson ESPN Staff Writer

Duke already has 15 turnovers tonight against Miami. Its season high is 19, against South Dakota in December.

Andrea Adelson ESPN Staff Writer

Miami opened the second half on a quick 7-2 run, forcing Duke into more mistakes while getting a few more clutch plays from freshman Chris Lykes.

Andrea Adelson ESPN Staff Writer

One thing you can bet Mike Krzyzewski is going to want to get cleaned up at halfime: turnovers. Duke had 12 turnovers in the first half, more than it averages over an entire game.

Andrea Adelson ESPN Staff Writer

As if it needed to be said again, the freshmen talent Duke has across its roster makes it so good and so fun to watch. In the first half against Miami, Wendell Carter Jr. and Gary Trent Jr. took center stage, combining for 23 points as the Blue Devils have a small lead at halftime.

Andrea Adelson ESPN Staff Writer

Duke freshman forward Wendell Carter Jr. has been difficult for Miami to slow down in the first half - he already has 10 rebounds and nine points and has been nearly unstoppable.
