Kentucky G De'Aaron Fox's 39 points Friday vs. UCLA were the most by a Wildcats player in an NCAA tournament game since Tayshaun Prince scored 41 against Tulsa in 2002, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. (Photo by Andy Lyons/Getty Images)

John Calipari on the SEC: "Every game we play is a Super Bowl ... and I think it also helps South Carolina and Florida. And Vandy, Vandy should have won that game. Arkansas should have won that game. Our league had 11 teams in the top 100." (Photo by Nelson Chenault/USA TODAY Sports)

Xavier has done an admirable job of getting to the rim, and finished with 39 points in 35 trips against one of the best defenses in the country. Less admirable: XU shot just five 3s in the half and didn't make their first until Trevon Bluiett's with one minute left in the first half. Gonzaga is 8-of-13 from deep. Something will need to change for the Musketeers; the current state of affairs is unsustainable.

If Gonzaga continues to play almost completely turnover-free and to make a 3 every two and a half minutes, this will be one tall order for Xavier. The Bulldogs shot 8-of-13 from beyond the arc, with Josh Perkins leading the way with three triples. The scouting report says to let the Zags take those, but Mark Few's guys have been knocking them down.

First-half jump shots, via ESPN Stats & Info: • Gonzaga: 14-24 (58.3%) for 36 points (8-13 from 3) • Xavier: 4-15 (26.7%) for 9 points (1-5 from 3)

Wild ending to the first half in San Jose, with the freak own-goal of the tournament bouncing in on Gonzaga's end, followed by J.P. Macura's just-late 80-foot buzzer beater off the glass. Chris Mack walked to the locker room making the universal symbol for "count the bucket." Someone will have to relay the bad news.

Jonathan Williams wasn't even acknowledged by a closeout when he hit his first 3. A couple makes later and he's able to shot fake and drive. And-one.

Gonzaga poses a ton of issues in the half-court for Xavier because of how well they shoot and how effective Przemek Karnowski is as a passer. Hard to zone them, hard to double Karnowski.

Just before Przemek Karnowski picked up his second foul, he put an extra no-look walk into a kick out to Nigel Williams-Goss, who banged a 3. Karnowski pumped his fist and screamed "let's go Nig!" at his point guard. Gonzaga's on an 8-2 run.

Chris Mack stressed yesterday that his team (and, in his view, any team) had to get the ball inside to succeed offensively. The Musketeers take the highest percentage of their field goals around the rim of any team left in the bracket, per hoop-math.com. Thus far they've taken two 3s in 21 field goal attempts -- almost all of which have been at the rim.

Contrasting early approaches in San Jose: Seven of Gonzaga's eight FGA have been 3s, while Xavier has yet to attempt a shot outside the arc. Both effective thus far.

If No. 11-seeded Xavier gets a win over No. 1-seeded Gonzaga in Saturday's West Regional final, the Musketeers could become just the fifth double-digit seed to defeat a No. 1 seed.
