South Carolina proves it belongs in NCAA tournament (1:25)

John Gasaway ESPN Insider

South Carolina scored at a rate well below the SEC average this season, but tonight, particularly after halftime, the hoops gods granted the Gamecocks their wish. Frank Martin's guys got to feel what it's like to be UCLA. Sindarius Thornwell led the way (29 points), and South Carolina rung up 93 points in 72 possessions against the hapless Marquette defense.

South Carolina advances to face Duke after 93-73 win over Marquette. That will make for an impromptu ACC-SEC challenge with North Carolina-Arkansas playing the other game in Greenville.

Turnovers and giving up offensive boards absolutely killed Marquette in second half. Gamecocks just wore them down.

Gamecocks finding unexpected offensive boost thanks in part to Marquette turnovers. South Carolina also flirting with shooting 50% FG for just the sixth time this season and just the second time in 2017.

Jeff Goodman ESPN Insider

This South Carolina-Marquette game has been awesome. Helps that the Gamecocks making shots -- and also helps so much energy in building with it being so close to Columbia.

• Marquette in its last five wins: 90.8 PPG • Marquette in its last five losses: 68.8 PPG Had 40 in the first half against South Carolina.

Marquette would probably have a comfortable lead if this wasn't a semi-home game for South Carolina. Gamecocks getting an energy boost from partisan crowd every time it seems their losing ground. Still don't understand how a seventh seed can play this close to home.

C.L. Brown ESPN Staff Writer

Marquette showing why it leads the nation in 3-point percentage. It has six players who shoot greater than 35% from behind the arc and so far they're getting clean looks vs South Carolina.

Ryan McGee ESPN Senior Writer

All due respect to Duke, UNC & HB2, South Carolina is the headliner in Greenville, SC. At noon scalpers were cleaning up on Session 2 tickets, roughly ten hours before the Gamecocks play Marquette. A gentleman among a trio of street sellers told me, "We're already getting twice face value for tonight and honestly it ain't got much to do with Duke." Added another: "This is the only place where Gamecocks basketball will ever outdo Duke and the other Carolina."
