End of an era at Georgetown; what next for the Hoyas?

In the past 45 years, Georgetown has had a Thompson leading the program for 40 seasons. Firing John Thompson III means the Hoyas will have to go outside the family for their next coach.

Britt McHenry ESPN

Orlando Magic forward Jeff Green on Georgetown parting ways with John Thompson III: "I'm not happy with the firing at all. I'm fully behind coach and forever support him. Where ever he goes I go. He helped me get to the NBA, and he will continue to do that with kids. Georgetown made the wrong decision smh."

ESPN Stats and Information

In the past 10 seasons, five of Georgetown's six NCAA Tournament losses were to double-digit seeds. Only one coach has more than five losses to double-digit seeds: Jim Boeheim (six in 34 such games compared with five in 10 for John Thompson III).

ESPN Stats and Information

Georgetown won at least one game in the NCAA tournament in each of John Thompson III's first three appearances (2006, 2007, 2008). But from 2010-15, the Hoyas were 2-5 in the NCAA tournament with three losses in the round of 64.

Just got a couple calls from coaches and agents who may have interest in Georgetown, asking same question: "How involved will Big John Thompson be?" His involvement could scare off potential candidates.

Andy Katz ESPN Senior Writer

If Georgetown stays in the family, Charlotte Hornets assistant coach Patrick Ewing makes the most sense. If outside, Hoyas should make a run at Harvard's Tommy Amaker.
