A peek ahead to next season's all-mid-major team

You might not know Florida Gulf Coast's Brandon Goodwin, but you should. He's one of the best mid-major players in the country and part of our all-mid-major team for next season.

Gardner-Webb transfer Laquincy Rideau has already visited Florida Gulf Coast. Heads to Middle Tennessee today, South Florida this weekend, and UMass on Monday. 14.2 PPG, 5.2 APG, 3.0 SPG.

Memphis transfer Keon Clergeot is considering Florida Gulf Coast and UMass.

Missed this quote from Jonathan Isaac last night: "They're Dunk City, but I think our team leads the nation in dunks. That's what we do."

Florida St. holds off FGCU's late run to move on

Dwayne Bacon scored 25 points and Jonathan Isaac added 17 points and 10 rebounds to help the third-seeded Florida State Seminoles hold off No. 14 Florida Gulf Coast 86-80 in the first round of th

Florida Gulf Coast came into its game against Florida State labeled as a tough mid-major that nevertheless struggles to make 3s. That label turned out to be about right. Brandon Goodwin gave the Seminoles fits (to the tune of 28 points), but he and his teammates hit just 29 percent of their tries from beyond the arc. That was all FSU needed on a night when Dwayne Bacon was feasting in the paint.

Kevin Keatts, Steve Forbes and Joe Dooley are all hot mid-major names for the coaching carousel. All three came to Orlando looking to get a win and boost their profile. But there will be no Andy Enfield-esque run from any of the three. Would guess at least one of them makes a move this spring, though.

Led by 25 points from Dwayne Bacon, Florida State holds off a late comeback attempt by Florida Gulf Coast to advance to the second round. Only 11-seed Xavier stands between the Seminoles and their first trip to the Sweet 16 since 2011.

Florida State kept Florida Gulf Coast at bay for most of the game, winning 86-80. Size and depth was too much. When Florida State is rolling and Dwayne Bacon and Jonathan Isaac are making shots, they look like a Final Four team. But they also are prone to scoring droughts and stretches of indifference defensively. They need to find consistency if they want to make a deep run.

Dwayne Bacon and Brandon Goodwin jawing at each other after that Florida State timeout. Referee had to come over and get in between them.

Florida State has ratcheted up the intensity a little bit. Extending its zone defense to contest outside shots from Florida Gulf Coast and force FGCU to go inside, where the Seminoles have length and size waiting. Dwayne Bacon coming up with timely plays at both ends of the floor.

Florida State has held a solid cushion over Florida Gulf Coast for most of the second half, but hasn't been able to completely pull away. Every time the Seminoles look like they're going to blow things open, the Eagles make a mini-run to claw back into it. What remains to be seen is if FCGU can turn one of those mini-runs into sustained success to erase the deficit.

Florida Gulf Coast's Demetris Morant is helped off the court after falling awkwardly. Had done an admirable job against Florida State's size.

Dwayne Bacon scored 16 points in the first half - including 6 in the final 1:20 - to give Florida State a 40-36 halftime lead over Florida Gulf Coast. The Seminoles are dominating inside, shooting 69% on 2-pointers (and 0% on 3s).

Florida State up four at the half. Dwayne Bacon had six points in the final 80 seconds of the first half, eight points in the final 2:29. Florida State started figuring out the FGCU zone, also was able to get out in transition more.

Jeff Borzello ESPN Staff Writer

In the middle part of the first half, it looked like Florida State was going to run FGCU out of the gym -- and then the Seminoles didn't make a shot for around four minutes. Gulf Coast staying in the game due to the 3-point shot. Florida State hasn't hit one yet.

Rayjon Tucker threw down a massive posterizing slam for Florida Gulf Coast, energizing the fans in Orlando and helping to power a 10-0 run that had given the Eagles the lead against 3-seed Florida State.

Jeff Borzello ESPN Staff Writer

Florida Gulf Coast having a tough time with Florida State's size and athleticism at the rim. Seminoles are dominating on the glass, in the paint, and continue to contest and alter shots defensively. Might make sense for Gulf Coast to go smaller to spread Florida State defensively, but it's probably not an option given how good the Seminoles are on the offensive glass.

Jeff Borzello ESPN Staff Writer

Florida State's Jonathan Isaac struggled down the stretch of the season, especially from the perimeter, but he needs to impose his will in this game. There's no one on Florida Gulf Coast that can check in. Isaac has been aggressive early.

Jeff Borzello ESPN Staff Writer

Not surprisingly, the arena has filled up for in-state battle between Florida State and Florida Gulf Coast. Also a lot of Florida fans sticking around for FGCU.

Adam Reisinger ESPN.com

Florida Gulf Coast literally wears its "Dunk City" identity on its sleeve. But if the 14-seed Eagles want to pull off the upset, they need to find a way to slow down a Florida State offense that ranks 18th in the nation in scoring.

Adam Reisinger ESPN.com

FGCU's Demetris Morant has one of the more unorthodox shot releases you'll ever see - and it helped him shoot 75.7% from the field this season.

Adam Reisinger ESPN.com

Dunk City is back in the Big Dance. Florida Gulf Coast has won at least one game in both of its previous NCAA Tournament appearances: a First Four game last year and two games during the unforgettable run to the Sweet 16 in 2013.
