Taua to sit out bowl game

Nevada junior running back Vai Taua has been ruled academically ineligible for the Dec. 24 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, the university announced Saturday.

Taua, who did not travel with the team, is the Wolf Pack's leading rusher with 1,345 yards and 10 touchdowns. Nevada has the nation's top rushing offense.

"I'm upset and disappointed that Vai didn't fulfill his obligations as a student-athlete," Nevada coach Chris Ault said. "He has let his team down and I will evaluate his future with the program after the bowl game. Our focus now is on the upcoming game and our program is moving forward in that direction."

Nevada had three 1,000-yard rushers. Sixth-year senior Luke Lippincott has 1,034 yards and nine touchdowns and quarterback Colin Kaepernick has 1,160 rushing yards and 16 rushing touchdowns.

Lippincott will not play because of toe surgery. Lampford Mark and Mike Ball will split carries in the backfield for the Wolf Pack.
