Navy 8: The US Navy attempts to be sustainable while underway. They limit the amount of plastics on board and order most of their food items in tin and glass containers. If necessary and only at the appropriate nautical distance, they will shred and crush the inert metals and glass, place them in recycled burlap bag, and dispose of them overboard. It is believed that these items will sink to the bottom and not disrupt ocean ecology. Disposing of these heavy items can save on fuel used while at sea but the officers also know the metal is has monetary return if recycled. They make the decision to discharge these items based upon many factors around the deployed vessel. Sailor ENS Cory Vandivier explains the solid waste shredding process.
