Before Broadway

In 1964, Broadway Joe cemented his legacy at Alabama. Then known as Joe Willie Namath, the Pennsylvania native won Coach Bryant his second national title at UA. Namath was named the most outstanding player of the 1965 Orange Bowl, passing for two touchdowns and 255 yards on a gimpy leg. It was the end of a college career that yielded a 29-4 record and three bowl appearances. He set single-season records in his first year as a starter, and by the time he left for the NFL, he had set school records for pass attempts, completions, yardage and touchdowns. -- Alex Scarborough
