The MUSS

Utah offensive tackle Tony Bergstrom calls the MUSS -- "The Mighty Utah Student Section" -- "a nightmare for an opposing offense."

The MUSS is about being loud, way louder than most would think a 45,000-seat stadium could be. But the MUSS at Rice-Eccles Stadium has earned a reputation as one of the nation's most active, organized and LOUD student sections.

MUSS has become a nice acronym, but that was arrived at after-the-fact. "Muss" is a word taken from the fight song "Utah Man," and the word muss means "a state of disorder, confusion or chaos." MUSS staples include the "third-down jump" and the "first-down chant" and the "U of U chop." It keeps tabs on false starts and, when Utah scores, sings "Utah Man." -- Ted Miller
