With Alabama not having named a quarterback, USC coach Clay Helton was asked about having to prepare for different options. Summed up: having two different styles in Max Browne and Sam Darnold will give the USC defense the varied looks it needs to get ready.

No. 13 TCU has its starting quarterback: Kenny Hill. Gary Patterson just made the announcement after the Frogs' practice today. The Texas A&M transfer had a good competition with sophomore Foster Sawyer. Hill's SEC experience and ability to make plays in the run game were hard to beat.

Gus Malzahn announces that Sean White will be Auburn's starting quarterback Week 1 against Clemson. "All three guys competed at s very high level. I just felt like it was time to name a starter, and Sean won the job."

Newly named Stanford starting QB Ryan Burns took the majority of first-team reps at practice today, but David Shaw repeated that Keller Chryst will also play next Friday against Kansas State. "He needs to get his share of reps also," Shaw said. The Cardinal will release their first depth chart on Sunday.

Nick Saban said things will change with USC prep beginning tomorrow: "It's time now -- a little bit judgment day -- of who we're going to coach." Still no decision on who starts at QB, though.

Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst has announced fifth-year senior Bart Houston will be the team's starting quarterback for the season opener against LSU. He beats out redshirt freshman Alex Hornibrook, who will be the backup. "I felt like Bart did everything that he needed to do and earned the right to get the start," Chryst said. Houston has appeared in 15 career games, and this will mark his first career start.

USC offensive coordinator Tee Martin on the depth difference with this year's offense as opposed to recent versions: "At times when you're not deep, the defense can see what you're capable of doing in the first drive, like, 'OK, that's it.' Now, when you're rolling in backups and guys are staying fresh, that's the best part I'm feeling. When the [backups] go in, it's like a different speed and different strengths because they're fresh. In the past, we had players that had to get every rep in practice and every rep in games."

Devon Allen is back with the Ducks and transitioning from track-shape to football-shape. With how deep the Oregon wide receiver corps are this year it's not necessary for the Ducks to rush him back but he'll certainly be a big boost to the unit when he's ready full go. W

Nebraska offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf tells me it's important for QB Tommy Armstrong Jr. to use "all of the play" this season. "Some of the interceptions had maybe better options," Langsdorf said. "Part of it is not asking the quarterback to do too much or having too many options for the receivers. Being able to say, ‘If we're getting this particular coverage, this guy should be good, and if we get a different look, we've got to move on to another player.'" Armstrong eclipsed 3,000 pass yards last year but also threw 16 interceptions, second most in the FBS.

The competition at QB is ongoing at Alabama. True freshman Jalen Hurts (2) is making a strong push to play against USC.
