Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente said Bucky Hodges will play both wide receiver and tight end this season. "That's the advantage of having a guy like that," Fuente said. Hodges was third on the team last season with 40 receptions for 530 yards and six touchdowns catches. The Hokies could use a reliable third receiver behind Isaiah Ford and Cam Phillips.

North Carolina coach Larry Fedora said his team hasn't done anything different with its preparation for Georgia despite not knowing who the starting quarterback is going to be. "We know there's going to be a guy under center who's going to be able to give it to Nick Chubb and the bevy of backs they have," Fedora said.

As of Wednesday morning there's no change at QB, according to Nick Saban. Cooper Bateman and Blake Barnett are still the two candidates to play against USC. Saban said he's looking for "consistency in performance" as a deciding factor.

One area to watch when Alabama kicks off against USC on Saturday is how Calvin Ridley fares as the Tide's punt returner. He could be a significant weapon there. Nick Saban called him "explosive" and you saw that as a Freshman All-American receiver last year.bSaid Saban: "We're excited to see how he does in that role."

Syracuse coach Dino Babers said he and the coaching staff had to start all over with quarterback Eric Dungey. "He has fantastic legs, but in our offense we are looking for a thrower first," Babers said. "We need people who can sit in the pocket and deliver the ball to the people we want. He's done a nice job of trying to curtail his game to exactly what we need. If he has to take off, he has that ability, but we are trying to keep him in the pocket more. "

Louisville coach Bobby Petrino kept up the praise for quarterback Lamar Jackson, who leads the Cards against Charlotte on Thursday night. Though Jackson can run as well as any quarterback out there, Petrino is eager to see Jackson throw the ball down the field. "We're still going to utilize his legs, but he is a passer," Petrino said. "Before it's over with, he's going to be a great drop back passer."

Florida State quarterback Deondre Francois has won over the No. 4 Seminoles with his work ethic and demeanor. Coach Jimbo Fisher said Francois has embraced the grind of camp.

With a starting defensive end out against Auburn, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said lineman Christian Wilkins' role will be "critical in us having a chance to win the game. He's prepared and capable of playing end and tackle." He's not giving away where Wilkins will play Saturday.

The CFP selection committee has every statistic imaginable at its fingertips but it goes beyond that. "You balance what you see on paper, statistically, with the flow of the game," said former committee member Mike Gould. "I often thought momentum shifts, and how one team would respond when the mimetic turned against them. To me, that tells you a lot about teams that have championship caliber and teams that don't."

Bronco Mendenhall saw a "dejected, despondent, desperate" Virginia in his first team meeting, so he stripped the Cavaliers of their jersey numbers. He felt he had to rebuild from the ground up, which began with players earning the right to represent UVa and creating team unity. He said he plans to do this ever year.

Hugh Freeze told me this summer that the early rankings "adds a lot to our job to handle the psyche of our kids, whether you're up there, whether you're not." The committee's official rankings don't come out until Nov. 1. For fans, Freeze said "it's almost like if you're not in a New Year's Six bowl, it's a downer."

A return to normalcy for Les Miles, LSU

The CFP was structured with the intent to allow more than one team from the same conference, so it's definitely possible. Remember, in 2014 the committee's very first ranking had three teams from the same division (SEC West). The ACC appears to have the best shot at 2 teams because of its odds of having an undefeated champ and 1-loss runner-up, whereas Pac-12, B1G and SEC are more likely to have 2-loss champ.

The Big 12 has informed East Carolina that it is no longer being considered as an expansion candidate. Here's a statement from ECU chancellor Cecil Staton: "I am proud of the support Pirate Nation provided to our efforts. While I am disappointed by the decision, I remain undaunted in my commitment to ECU athletics and the excellence displayed by our wonderful student-athletes, coaches and staff."

"This is not the end. This is the beginning." After Alabama won its first title under Nick Saban, those two sentences from the coach at the team's championship celebration set the tone for everything that was to come. Saban's mission statement
