A looming showdown between Kentucky football coach Rich Brooks and athletic director Mitch Barnhart over staff changes has been averted. Offensive coordinator Ron Hudson resigned Monday, effective immediately.
Brooks dug in his heels earlier this season, saying that he would quit before firing the embattled Hudson. A meeting last week between Brooks and Barnhart left the two in a stalemate, and it appeared that Brooks might be fired after the season finale against Tennessee Nov. 27 if he did not change his mind.
Hudson made it a moot point Monday by tendering his resignation. As a result, Brooks is expected back for a third season in Lexington. His record to date as coach of the Wildcats is 6-16.
Recruiting coordinator Joker Phillips and offensive line coach Paul Dunn will call plays against the Volunteers, with input from Brooks.
Hudson's offense ranks 115th in Division I-A and has not scored more than two touchdowns in a game since Sept. 18th.
