MINNEAPOLIS -- David Lockwood has been promoted to defensive
coordinator at Minnesota, one of several staff changes announced
Friday by coach Glen Mason.
Lockwood, the Gophers' secondary coach since 2002, served as
interim coordinator for Minnesota's Music City Bowl victory over
Alabama after Greg Hudson left for the same job at East Carolina.
Lockwood will also coach inside linebackers.
Assistant head coach Moe Ankney was reassigned from defensive
ends to outside linebackers, Kerry Cooks was hired as defensive
secondary coach and Carey Bailey was hired as defensive line coach.
Earlier this month, Luke Tressel was promoted from assistant
strength and conditioning coach to wide receivers coach. Before the
bowl game, Mitch Browning was named sole offensive coordinator. He
previously shared that role with quarterbacks coach Tony Petersen.
Cooks comes to Minnesota from Western Illinois, where he served
as defensive backs coach and assisted on all of the special teams
units last season. After a standout career at Iowa, Cooks was a
fifth-round draft pick by the Vikings in 1998 who spent time with
four different teams until his retirement in 2001.
Bailey was Oklahoma State's defensive line coach last season. He
played at Tennessee from 1988-91.
Defensive line coach Tom Sims and wide receivers coach Richard
Wilson were fired by Mason in January.
