LSU lands three on first team

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Eight LSU players were named to the 2005 Southeastern Conference Coaches Preseason All-Conference football team, the conference announced Wednesday.

Andrew Whitworth, LaRon Landry and Skyler Green led the list of Tigers selected to the All-SEC first team.

Whitworth, a senior offensive tackle, started all 12 games last season and enters 2005 with 39 straight starts.

Landry, a junior safety, led LSU in tackles with 92 last season and collected a team-best four interceptions.

Green, a senior wide receiver, was a first-team special teams member as a return specialist. In 2004, Green totaled 492 return yards combined on kickoffs and punts, including one punt return for a touchdown.

The Florida Gators had 12 players selected to the coaches' preseason All-Southeastern Conference team while Auburn led the way with six first-team picks.

The defending league champion Tigers, who had 11 players make the list, also had the only unanimous choice in offensive tackle Marcus McNeill. Coaches weren't allowed to vote for their own players in choosing the first- second- and third-teamers.

Tennessee had 10 players make one of the teams while Alabama and Georgia each had nine.

Vanderbilt's Jay Cutler was the first-team pick at quarterback, selected over Chris Leak of Florida and Brodie Croyle of Alabama.

Only Arkansas and Kentucky did not place a player on the preseason first-team. This is the second year coaches have voted on the preseason teams.
