Houston Bowl extends deal with Big 12, adds Big East

HOUSTON -- The Houston Bowl has extended its agreement with
the Big 12 Conference through the 2009 season and announced a
partnership with the Big East Conference.

The bowl currently pits a Big 12 team against a team from the
Southeastern Conference. Last year the SEC couldn't produce a team
and Colorado faced UTEP.

The Big 12 will continue to send its No. 6 team and could send
its fifth-place team in one year of the new agreement.

The Big East will send its second or third selection behind the
conference champion to the Houston Bowl. Also included in the
agreement is a chance to host Notre Dame in one of the four years,
officials said Monday.

"Big 12 teams have been part of the bowl since its inception
and we very much appreciate the continued opportunity to have a
presence in Houston," Big 12 commissioner Kevin Weiberg said in a

The Houston Bowl is scheduled for Dec. 31 at Reliant Stadium.
