LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech's defense made it tough on the
offense Saturday, coming up with six sacks and allowing only a
field goal through the first three quarters of the annual Red-Black
"Defensively, I think this is the most impressive group of guys
able to respond to play after play," Tech coach Mike Leach said.
"Overall, they did a great job making big plays and working well
Sophomore walk-on linebacker Calen Shearer led with seven
tackles. Three others had six tackles each.
"We came out and competed real well for our offense," senior
nose tackle Chris Hudler said. "We kept them out of the end zone
as much as possible."
The offense was limited to 223 yards in the first half after
losing 20 yards on the ground. It finished with 438 yards.
Kobey Lewis, the leading rusher with 33 yards on seven carries,
scored on a 6-yard run in the fourth quarter. Sophomore walk-on
quarterback Ryan Rowland completed a 3-yard touchdown pass to Kelly
"We moved the ball at times, and then there were times when we
couldn't get the ball to move very far. I think we can definitely
improve on some things but overall I feel that we played pretty
good," Harrell said.
