MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Former West Virginia football coach Don Nehlen is recuperating at Morgantown's Ruby Memorial Hospital after undergoing triple heart bypass surgery.
Nehlen's son-in-law, former NFL quarterback Jeff Hostetler, says Nehlen underwent surgery Tuesday following routine testing.
Dr. Jose Cruzzavala, a WVU surgeon, performed the surgery.
"Recovery is going well. We appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers, and we also appreciate everyone respecting our family's privacy during this time," Hostetler said in a statement.
"We are looking forward to a speedy recovery, getting him back on the golf course and rooting for the Mountaineers."
Nehlen, 72, is West Virginia's winningest football coach with a 149-93-4 record in 21 seasons. Nehlen also coached nine seasons at his alma mater, Bowling Green, and has an overall record of 202-138-8 in 30 seasons.
His 1988 and 1993 teams had the only two perfect regular seasons in West Virginia school history.
Nehlen retired after the 2000 season and was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2005.
