HICKORY, N.C. -- The last coach to lead Duke to a bowl game is calling it a career after 45 seasons.
Fred Goldsmith announced his retirement Tuesday. He had been coaching at Lenoir-Rhyne for four years, going 17-27 and leading the Division II Bears to a 7-4 record in 2010.
Goldsmith coached at Rice from 1989-93 before beginning a five-year stint with the Blue Devils in 1994. He was the Atlantic Coast Conference's coach of the year that season and took Duke to the Hall of Fame Bowl -- one of only two bowl games for the Blue Devils since 1961.
Lenoir-Rhyne president Wayne Powell called Goldsmith "a winner on the field and off."
The school promoted defensive coordinator Mike Houston to acting head coach.
