The Outback Bowl sure loves Iowa. The Hawkeyes are going to the game for the fifth time since 2003 and will play Florida as its Outback opponent for the third time. Offense will likely be at a premium in this game.

Western Michigan's trip to the Cotton Bowl is an awesome story. It's a disaster of a ticket. $135 face value tickets already at $20.

Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby's questions for the playoff committee about non-conference scheduling and the 13th data point are pertinent. They appear especially poignant this year. But I think he knows some version of the answer he'll receive: There is no playoff formula that will perfectly fit every team, every year. More often than not, though, Big 12 teams will be best served to schedule tough.

Selection committee chair Kirby Hocutt explains why Florida State got the Capital One Orange Bowl bid over Louisville despite a 43-point head to head loss. "The selection committee felt like Florida State was the better football team at the end of this season ... We're looking at the full body of work and we're not basing our rankings and our decisions on one particular game." Hocutt said head to head is important but just one factor to consider.

Clemson's Dabo Swinney and the football team honored at halftime of the Tigers' basketball game. "Little old Clemson, back to back in the college football playoff," Swinney said. "Last year we went into the playoff No. 1 and finished No. 2. This year we're looking forward to going in No. 2 and finishing No. 1."

Pac-12 in final College Football Playoff rankings: 4. Washington; 9. USC; 10. Colorado; 18. Stanford; 19. Utah. So Washington won title in conference with three top-10 teams and five in top-20. With USC in Rose Bowl, that means conference will divide a $10 million payout between its 12 teams. Fair to say the conference was top-heavy more than deep this year. Six teams with eight or more wins — Washington State at 8-4 -- but those were the only bowl eligible teams.

To illustrate the razor-thin margin in this age of parity in college football, consider No. 18 Stanford: Two fumbled snaps -- one against Colorado this season and another against Oregon in 2015 -- very well might have cost the Cardinal CFP and Rose Bowl berths in the past two years.

Edward Aschoff ESPN Staff Writer

Committee clearly didn't care about head-to-head with Louisville and Florida State. Cardinals destroyed FSU and had two fewer ACC losses than the Noles yet is two slots lower than FSU because of losses to Houston and Kentucky at season's end. So FSU gets Capital One Orange Bowl. Strange

Colorado finishes No. 10 but won't be headed to the New Year's Six. Still, an exceptional season from Mike MacIntyre and the Buffaloes that no one -- outside of Boulder -- saw coming.

How did J.T. Barrett find out Ohio State was heading to the College Football Playoff? "I was at my house, watching by myself and eating some chicken wings," Barrett said with a smile. "I wasn't really nervous."

Western Michigan gets its trip to the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic. The Broncos were ranked 15th in this week's poll and will try to keep the Group of Five undefeated(Boise State in 2014, Houston 2015) in the NY6 bowls in playoff era.

Wisconsin officials last night were a little worried about how excited their fan base would be to travel to Dallas to see their team play Western Michigan, coming off a tough loss in the Big Ten title game. Turnout will be interesting, but Paul Chryst has had his team ready every single week in a meat grinder schedule.

Tennessee is No. 21 because of ... why? Championship of life?

Louisville beat Florida State 63-20 in September, one of the most impressive wins anyone had this season. But despite that win, the Cards lost a spot in the Capital One Orange Bowl with consecutive losses to Houston and Kentucky to end the season. Louisville and FSU finished 9-3 but the committee was more impressed with the Noles' body of work.

The Auburn defense went 10 weeks without allowing a rushing touchdown until it faced Alabama. What a matchup in the Allstate Sugar Bowl against Oklahoma and backs Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon, who have combined for 2,225 yards and 19 rushing scores.
