After allowing touchdowns on four straight drives and falling behind by 13 points early in the second half, USC found a way to pull out a win against Washington State. The Trojans' 39-36 win, however, will probably feel like a temporary sigh of relief as they narrowly avoided a 1-3 start.

"We are getting better. There's certain plays, there's certain quarters, there's certain series that you're not happy with," James Franklin said after Penn State improved to 4-0.

Offensively, Washington State's first half against USC has to be one of the most impressive of Mike Leach's tenure. QB Gardner Minshew completed 22 of 31 passes for 179 yards and the offense marched methodically for touchdowns on its final three drives. USC's pass rush has been invisible.

For all the panic about Penn State's offense post-Saquon Barkley/Joe Moorhead, the Lions not only have a viable rushing threat in Miles Sanders, but new coordinator Ricky Rahne has maintained the selective aggressiveness that came to define Moorhead's PSU offenses. It helps, of course, to have a quarterback like Trace McSorley, who tonight overcame a choppy first half and has delivered after halftime.

USC's 75-yard touchdown drive to start the game was exactly the type of drive it needed after being held to negative rushing yards at Texas last week. Five plays, all runs, too easy. They have too many talented running backs not to make the ground game the priority. If that's working, the pass game will be fine.
