Illinois coach Lovie Smith said diversifying the candidate pool for head coaching hires is complicated. But he also said he's made an effort to elevate capable minority assistants on his staff and prepare them for a head coaching job. He said that's the only way to change the lack of diversity. "I know what I do with my program."

Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi hopes his secondary can improve from last season. At the very least, Narduzzi said they can breath a little bit of a sigh of relief with Deshaun Watson, Mitch Trubisky and Brad Kaaya off in the NFL now. "You look at the ACC, we're not going to face those stud quarterbacks," he said.

UNC coach Larry Fedora is excited to see former LSU QB Brandon Harris compete for the starting job when camp opens early next month. Harris hasn't been on campus long, but Fedora said, "He seems to be a great kid. The personality, you can tell he has leadership capabilities. It's going to be interesting."

Countdown to college football: 38 days! LSU running back Derrius Guice accounted for 38 percent of his team's scrimmage touchdowns last season, the third-highest rate among Power 5 players last season. Guice has 20-1 odds to win the Heisman this season.

ESPN 300 quarterback Matt Corral committed to Florida on Saturday. Corral, the No. 87 ranked prospect overall, decommitted from USC in June and tweeted his decision to commit to the Gators after visiting for the Friday Night Lights recruiting event. Florida now has six ESPN 300 commitments in the 2018 class with Corral on board.

According to a source, Arizona's director of player personnel, Matt Dudek, is the new director of recruiting at Michigan. Dudek's hire is expected to be announced Monday.

Tennessee defensive back Jaylin Williams decommitted from Ole Miss on Saturday. Williams is a 2018 prospect and is the second decommitment for the Rebels since coach Hugh Freeze resigned, along with 2019 recruit Bobby Wolfe.

Alabama landed its sixth ESPN 300 commit for the 2018 class on Friday. California offensive lineman Tommy Brown, ranked No. 111 overall, tweeted his commitment to the Tide and gives Alabama seven total commitments for the class.

Ohio State is hosting its annual Friday Night Lights recruiting event and there are some big recruiting visitors planned for the weekend. Defensive end Micah Parsons, a five-star recruit, will be in attendance as well as some big name 2019 targets. That includes California athlete Bru McCoy and Ohio native Zeke Correll . The recruits will be joined by some of the current Ohio State commitments as well, including quarterback Emory Jones.
