Gus Malzahn gets his guy with Chip Lindsey as the new offensive coordinator at Auburn. "Chip is a man of integrity and character who will fit well within our staff," Malzahn said in a news release. "He has great knowledge and enthusiasm for the game and is a rising star in this profession."

Brett McMurphy College football reporter

Arizona State OC Chip Lindsey will be Auburn's new offensive coordinator, source told ESPN. Lindsey previously worked with Auburn coach Gus Malzahn as an offensive analyst on the Tigers' 2013 team, that reached the BCS title game.

New Texas strength coach Yancy McKnight was asked today about the controversy at Oregon and noted his staff is providing longer rest times during the early phase of their offseason conditioning program, since Texas players didn't play in a bowl game and thus have been off for 7 weeks.

Max Olson ESPN Staff Writer

Like they did with their Houston team, Texas' new coaching staff will sort players into 3 groups this offseason. The "gold" players are leaders who take care of their business. "Green" players are improving. And the ones who need help, the troublemakers who skip class and tutoring? Strength coach Yancy McKnight says they'll be the "crimson" group, clearly a nod to rival Oklahoma.

Wisconsin's athletic board approves a contract renewal for Paul Chryst through January 2022. Chryst is 21-6 in his first two seasons.

Here's Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott, echoing the comments of other collegiate leaders on the importance of time-balance legislation passed today by the autonomy group:

Here are the schools that voted against the proposal to ban offseason trips for practice during a vacation period: NC State, North Carolina, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Pitt, Syracuse, Illinois, Michigan, South Carolina, Washington, West Virginia.

Michigan AD Warde Manuel, after the vote to ban spring-break practice trips, asked if he feels coach Jim Harbaugh is a target of college legislators: "The rule didn't get proposed until after we took the football team down to Florida for spring break. So I think you can read into that as you will."

Mitch Sherman ESPN Staff Writer

Addendum on the vote to prohibit spring-break football practice trips: Big Ten schools voted 11-3 in favor of the proposal to ban trips like the one Michigan took last year; student-athletes on the autonomy committee voted 11-4 against the ban.

The most interesting autonomy item, Proposal No. 2016-139, which bans off-campus practice during a vacation period outside the championship season, passes with approval from all five conferences and 58 of 80 votes. No more spring break trips to Florida for Jim Harbaugh, effective Aug. 1, 2017.

Proposal 2016-136-3 is the first to fail in the autonomy session. It would have allowed an exception for student-athletes to participate in "limited recruiting activities" during time away from athletic activities in the academic year.

Mitch Sherman ESPN Staff Writer

First time-balance proposal up for vote at the autonomy session was No. 2016-135, which prohibits athletically related activities (not including games) from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. It passes with unanimous approval. "That's a big deal," says Minnesota president Eric Kaler, chair of the D-I board of directors.

NCAA Division I Council chairman Jim Phillips confirmed the council will meet again on April 13-14 in Indianapolis, and it's during that session that the recruiting reform package that will create an early signing period in December and alter the official visit calendar for April-June trips is expected to pass.

Interesting comment during the autonomy discussion on Proposal No. 2016-139 (banning offseason practice off campus) from Nandi Mehta of Northwestern women's soccer: "Why are we here?" Mehta, among 15 student-athlete reps on the autonomy committee, opposes the proposal. She says the point of college athletics is to create opportunity for student-athletes. "I don't think it's right to strip a student-athlete of this opportunity."

Mitch Sherman ESPN Staff Writer

SEC commissioner Greg Sankey continues robust discussion over proposal to ban spring-break trips. Sankey is in favor of the proposal. Sankey notes that this would not ban overseas trips for teams in the offseason. And if there's an exception that needs to be made for skiing, Sankey said, that's fine. The bigger issue is time management.

Michigan AD Warde Manuel speaks in opposition of autonomy proposal to ban off-campus during non-championship season: "I'm in opposition of this legislation. I know this comes as a shock to many of my colleagues." Not one Michigan football player complained of the experience at IMG Academy last year, Manuel said. "If we want to take this further, we should not allow any practice."

The autonomy group is now discussing off-campus practice during a vacation period outside the championship season. They're looking at Michigan here.

The Power 5 schools at the NCAA convention are testing their voting buttons ahead of the autonomy session. Fairly simple question: Did you fly to Nashville? Well, Kansas State and Rutgers failed to vote. Fill in your own punchline.

NCAA president Mark Emmert said tonight he was proud of the association for its choice to move championship events out of North Carolina for the state's legal stance on transgender restroom usage. Emmert and Georgia Tech president Bud Peterson, the NCAA Board of Governors chair, declined to speculate on how other states' legislative decisions may impact the NCAA.

Cal announced it has hired USC associate head strength and conditioning coach Torre Becton as its head strength and conditioning coach.

David Lombardi ESPN Staff Writer

New Cal strength coach Torre Becton used to be on the staff at Washington. Upon reaching the CFP, many of this season's Husky seniors credited Becton for the mentality he helped instill in them back when they were freshmen.
