Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente on the Coastal Division: "I don't think there's a nickel's worth of difference right now. It's going to be a tough, hard grind for anyone to make it all the way through. It's going to be hard and could go about 1,000 different ways."

North Carolina coach Larry Fedora was asked about being in uncharted territory with a 1-6 team: "There's nothing that I like about it. We talk about adversity all the time as a football team, that overcoming adversity is one of the most important things you can do. This is just another form of adversity. We haven't changed anything. Our focus is on this day and being the best that we can be this day and then when Saturday gets here, it will all be about Virginia Tech."

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson said he didn't know yet whether B-back KirVonte Benson would be able to play against Wake Forest, but added "he's got a good chance." Benson left the Miami game with a leg injury.

Syracuse coach Dino Babers about his now famous post-game speeches to his team: "When you look into their eyes, it's like the Energizer Bunny beating that drum. Those kids, there's so much youth, there's so much energy ... that's what charges my batteries. ... I love being part of something that will stick with them the rest of their lives, their kids' lives and their grandkids' lives. That's the stuff that gets me going."

Syracuse coach Dino Babers said the one thing he learned about his team in the upset win over Clemson: "That we're capable ... They've been in some close games and they didn't win them, and now they've been in a close game they finally won and that gives them a lot of confidence."

Louisville coach Bobby Petrino said Florida State quarterback James Blackman attended a quarterback camp two summers ago in Louisville. Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher was asked about last year's loss to Louisville: "It woke some guys up ... it shows you how dynamic and explosive they are ... They played a heck of a game, there's no doubt."

Louisville coach Bobby Petrino said there has been an emphasis on tackling during practice this week, to help shore up some of the issues the defense has had. He said the two big keys are making sure players are using the right technique to be in position to make the tackle, and to get more players to the ball.

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney on his team moving forward during practice this week. "We had a bad day. We didn't have a bad year," Swinney said. "I like the fact that it hurts because I think a little pain makes you better."

Virginia linebacker Malcolm Cook will miss his third straight game with an ankle injury, but coach Bronco Mendenhall said it was "probable" that Cook would return next week against Pitt. "It's still going to be a race to get that done so I'm not going to present that as a sure thing, but I would say it's probable he'd be ready for the next one," Mendenhall said.

UCF has raised the bar for its football fundraising efforts, hoping to get $1.5 million annually over the next five years. Interestingly, coach Scott Frost has committed to supporting the effort. With Frost's name circulating as a rising star in the coaching ranks, it makes sense for UCF to do all it can to raise money to keep football competitive.

Stanford coach David Shaw said the Pac-12's schedule, where most teams play 6-8 league games in a row, increases the difficulty level compared to leagues where FCS opponents or weaker FBS opponents are mixed in. "It is back-to-back-to back-to-back conference games, and those are tough," Shaw said. "You're going to have games where you aren't at your absolute best. That's just life in the Pac-12."

It's no secret that Ed Orgeron's first stint as a head coach ended badly. He went 3-21 in SEC play in three seasons at Ole Miss and was fired. He admits now he was in over his head back then as a head coach, but said there's no added motivation for him when he takes his LSU team into Oxford on Saturday to face Ole Miss because he's right where he always wanted to be. "I can honestly tell you that's so far in the past that it's just another game to me because the truth is the whole time I was there I was wishing I were here," Orgeron told ESPN. "I always looked up to this program. I was like ‘Wow,' when I saw LSU, what a great program if I could ever be a part of this program. Now I'm here so it all worked out."
