Sam Darnold was ruled down before fumbling, but that's still a ding against him in the eyes of NFL scouts. His ball security should be the one major concern about his ability to succeed at the next level.

Kansas LB Joe Dineen, on the handshake snub: "It wasn't an attack on (Mayfield) personally at all. I respect him. He's obviously a great player. It was more for us personally to kind of put our foot down and kind of get a little bit fired up before the game and let them know that we're here and we're not going to just back down because you're Oklahoma."

Kansas coach David Beaty on his players snubbing Baker Mayfield at the coin toss: "I'm proud of our guys for getting to a point, and not just -- we're not going to take it anymore. You're going to stick your feet in the ground and you're going to defend your grass. I think we've got to display (it) better than that, obviously, but I get it. I understand where they're coming from. I've got to do a better job as their coach maybe teaching them how to manage that a little bit better. … But I certainly don't think it was anything more than the fact that this is a football game, and we're going to defend our grass. From that standpoint, I think it helped us. We were ready to go."

Kansas coach David Beaty, on the Baker Mayfield crotch grab: "I mean, I saw him, but he's a competitor. I mean, guys do what they do. I'm not sure exactly what took place. He's not my player. So, it's not my job to manage him. It's my job to get our guys to where they can -- they stop him where maybe a guy doesn't have that opportunity to do that. I don't control him. He's a terrific player. I know that. I'll tell you what, I haven't seen any better. That guy is a really, really good football player. I'm not sure what he said, but I know Coach (Lincoln) Riley is a classy guy. He'll manage it."

In tonight's NFL showcase event for Sam Darnold and Josh Rosen, the early advantage goes to Rosen (if only by default). The UCLA QB completed 11 of 16 passes for 146 yards and a touchdown in the first quarter, while Darnold completed all three of his pass attempts.

Every coach I talked to about Josh Rosen over the last coupe of months was blown away by his pure passing ability. You saw exactly that on the Bruins scoring drive. Here's what Washington defensive backs coach Jimmy Lake said about Rosen: "I am positive the NFL scouts are drooling over the arm talent, the measurable, the smarts, and then on top of it, he plays in a pro-style scheme and they run a lot of NFL concepts. The coaches, the scouts, they're going to see routes and throws that they teach in their own schemes, and they are going to be drooling over this prospect."

Credit to USC special teams coordinator John Baxter, who just orchestrated an amazing punt return for a touchdown. UCLA's entire coverage team chased down the wrong return man, leaving Michael Pittman a near clear path to the end zone for 72-yard score.

If USC decides to run the ball more than usual tonight, it's because of this: UCLA came into the game allowing 302.3 rushing yards per game, which is the most a Power 5 program has allowed dating back to 2004.
